so i've been messing around with some of the flash files on the cd jason gave us. unfortunately you can't look at what they are until you open them in flash and save them off the cd because they are read only and have a spack attack at me for trying to 'test movie' before i've saved it :S this makes it a long and arduous process. it took me all day to make two crappy thingamagigs that really have nothing to do with anything and are not related to each other in any way, and other than what i've done, any further changes that i try to make to the file seems to render it useless and it just doesn't work in the test. so i'm affraid they'll just have to stay as they are. i now realise that i'm really glad that i didn't use any mined files in m y portfolio. god they are hell to work with. and my portfolio doesn't really need fancy twirling things, but they are fun to work on just for individual things. i never got to make the game that i wanted to make at the start of this semester that i learnt how to make the password box for and everything... but maybe one day...

the things that I made yesterday don't really seem to have much to do with body movement... well i suppose one does and the other is to do with the body in a way. i tried to also make a 360 degrees twirler thingy but it just wouldnt' work for me :(

flash fun

what are the expectations for this final mini flash thing that is also due at the same time as the folio?? i would email jason but i wouldn't get a reply... so i am just shouting the question out into cyberspace...

i am thinking of doing something about body movement for mine. i made all these little movies with my webcam for it - when you wiggle the webcam around it looks like half of your face can be on one side of the screen and the other half is somewhere completely different. i also have lots of pics of this, some i have already used for a previous flash thingy. maybe i should take a heap more. but i'm not really sure how to present them in a flash site. i'm thinking or doing something that's just like a total mish-mash of them on the screen so they are all overlapping each other and going crazy etc. i should probably use some mined files to create something that is like "oh that's interesting". but i don't know... damn it it is saturday night. for the last month or so my saturday nights have consisted of FLASH. gah!

PS. please note for the folio that it starts with the html page 'folioindex2.html' and other stuffs come of from that page. don't ask me why there is a 2 after it... maybe i planned on making more of them, or maybe i made a folioindex and then deleted it in preference of this second one... i am really not sure now... but yeah, one may think that the starting page is 'loadmovie.html' however it is not folioindex2.html is where it is happening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

folio pics

folio finality

So it's friday the 9th, but it feels like saturday or sunday. It's my dog's 3rd birthday today.

my folio is on it's way to being finished. infact there is only one or two pages left that are not entirely finished. I'm having a lot of trouble locating some of the things that I wanted to put in the folio which is really saddening. Of course, first and foremost was that movie that i've already bitched about. A little section from that would have made an awesome opening page but instead I used that creepy clown looking picture, which I like, but i think it could have been so much more creative and creepy looking goddamn it ok i think i shall never get over this :(. moving on, there are also a couple of stories and essays that I cannot locate. I think i've deleted them by accident. I'm considering finding the hard copy that i handed in and scanning it into the computer, but I'm not sure if i want to go that far at this stage.

I'm glad things have come together like they have, as just a couple of weeks ago I was truely doubting my folio - i really hated it and wasn't having a fun time working on it. But now i have brought it back to simpler ideas that I know i can achieve (yes i know that i keep swapping between I and i), and so now I am more keen to work on it and get it done. Wow I'm going to be finished so damn early I rock technicoloured (and semi high, almost to the knee) socks.

A sweet sweet slider of folio pics, like that below of essay pics, will be coming shortly I hope.

I just have to say that I feel that I have probably not done this folio justice - and if i was really making myself a proper online folio i would probably spend a lot more time on it than what could be given for a Uni assignment. I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean i'd probably spend months and months and months on it and constantly change it. So if I end up putting this folio on the net I would probably try to make it EVEN BETTER before then. Maybe it can be something for me to think about over the summer break when it finally gets here. In saying all this, I am not suggesting that I think i have made a crap effort or that the folio will be handed in unfinished as neither are the case.

aw i notice that if you scroll down my blog you cannot see my first posts anymore. I did write more posts before you just can't see them because they have gone into archives... so yes... look for them in archives :)

some essay pictures

as promised here are some pictures from my up and coming essay

some essay explanation ps TURN ON SOUND FOR ESSAY

So here is just a quick recap of some of the things I have been getting up to with my assignments. Basically the past couple of weeks I have been concentrating on the essay. I'm am rather proud of it actually and I hate to say it but yes, Jason, you are right and I feel as though by doing it in the flash form I have become a little more confident with my flash abilities. This is not to say that I am now in any way advanced at it, but I feel more comfortable with navigating the layout of the program and I have been having fun with using simple keyframe animation elements in my essay.

My essay is a postmodern identity map. What this means is that I am using postmodern techniques to map out my identity, as I believe identity to be a rather postmodern thing in itself. After our discussion on creative non-fiction stories about people that I know, I have taken a few key people in my life and subtly told my own story through them. As we discussed, some of these people are very close to me (eg. my mother), other's used to be very close to me but now I no longer know (eg. ex boyfriend) and some are meant to be close to me but sort of aren't (eg. my sister) and also other strange combinations such as people who I don't know but am obsessed with (boyfriend's ex girlfriends) and people who just one tiny meeting made a huge impact on my life (highschool days). I hope that the stories show my close or distant relationships with these people, however this is not the only element to this essay as there is the element of it being a map of my identity. The image of the map is shown quite literally in many places within the imagery of the essay.

When i say that my identity is postmodern I mean this in terms of identity being a very non-linear, fluid and unfixed thing - it is quite difficult to describe ones own whole self, as there is just so much all connected together, this is why I chose to chanel it through something to make it easier to digest, such as mapping ones identity through the people around ones life, instead of just mapping ones identity as a whole, as that would just be a little over chaotic. Also, in keeping with this theme, the image of the 'web' is one seen more than once in my essay. In fact the main frame page looks like a web spanning outwards from the centre 'self' and people are connected to me via this web. The web also surfaces in the words themselves.

The stories aren't long and are not meant to 'tell' the viewer what my relationship is with the person but rather each story is an approximate ten minute slice of life that I shared with each of these people, this slice doesn't not even have to be a dramatic or life changing event in my life, but rather an ordinary event, as I believe the most important aspects of the relationship will be shown through these events. I am currently unaware of the word count of my identity however I think it is well over the minimum requirements. I have more than 20 html pages for this assignment. Don't worry, hopefully they will not be boring! I have tried to make them fun!

Considering I have little knowledge of flash, I tried to make the most of what I did know. I did not use any flash files souced from the net, and I know that is very naughty because you want us to 'mine' files, but I needed to keep within my own knowledge range to keep my sanity and to make sure I didn't break my files. Also I would argue that because of this, I did more work by creating everything from scratch. But that is the point of this essay, because when you look at it, everything has a hand-made quality to it and a lot of it is little animations that I could not have found anywhere else as it was just a matter of drawing them into each keyframe, this is done to make it look more like it is being drawn in front of your eyes (you will understand what I mean when you see the essay, I think).

Please remember to have speakers on when playing my essay. Music plays a big part in most of the main pages. All music was created by me either singing or on a keyboard (piano, not computer) which is pretty good considering I've never played piano in my life. None of the 'tunes' are plagiarised from anywhere, I just made them up in my head as I was going along. As I do not have swish programs I used the windows sound recorder to record these things using the free microphone that came with my webcam. This means there are limited effects on the sounds (except for one usage of 'reverse' woohoo!), also giving it a hand-made low-tech effect.

The same also goes for the jumping still image movies that are through out the essay. As you can tell I LOVE these things and they were created with windows movie maker and made to look 'old', so also very low tech.

The copyright thing also goes for pictures, these are all from my private collections. I did not take any of these pictures from the internet (with most pictures you can tell this because I am in the picture), and all the hand drawn pictures were drawn by me.

A lot of the pictures are photoshopped such as the picture on the 'mattmainpage' and on the 'danpage' where you can see red lines running over the faces. This is the result of scanned in road maps of where I live. I then traced along the roads in red and blue to make them look like veins and placed them over the other images using a series of effects. This takes the 'map' idea quite literally, but I believe is also sufficiently subtle as to not appear over-obvious.

**

Because of all this, in a round about way, I am wanting to rethink my folio to make it even cooler with my new-found SKILLZ however I can't think of anything snazzy looking. I would like to use some of the sounds that I made in 'sound recorder' for my folio but I am worried because I have already used them in my essay...

In fact I just tried to put some pictures of my essay into this post but the html just WOULD NOT bloody well agree with blogger but it seems to have worked if it is put in it's own seperate thing (picky) so they are above and you have probably already seen that.

Essay and Folio Early Stages

Essay Layout

Personal essay on domestic photography analysing author’s own photos from the 1980’s to early 90’s. In this way the creative interface can incorporate pictures easily. Photos will be analysed using Lacanian theories and perhaps Foucault and Jungian. Perpose for using photos from this era – purely artistic value – the old photos add a particular value that resonates with domestic photography, secondly I was perhaps too young to have started posing! Elements of the hyper real. Will focus on perhaps three photographs.

Mid Sebreaster Bake

I realise i have been possibly leaving out a lot of vital information that has happened to me and flash in the past few weeks but oh well i've forgotten it all now. So i will just go with what is relevant in the here and now...

THE ESSAY

I really have very limited ideas about what will be going on in my essay. My first visions were on something to do with domestic photography because I am really interested in it. Perhaps using some photos from my childhood as links etc because 1980's photographs have such a creepy quality to them. But i realise i have done something similar to this before in a previous assignment where i documented the divorce of my parents in a photo album, obviously this was not multimedia though and was for a cultural theory class. But i think i may have already used up most of my good ideas in that assignment and left not much for this one... But that was not using any old photos of my own but rather ones that i manufactured etc. And i do love those old photos.

So i re-read through the er makeshift 'assignment sheet' for it and tried to get inspiration or at least general understanding. I paid close attention to the idea that we make it like an online documentary. I started thinking about aspects of docos etc and how i could possibly do this without a video camera etc. Oh how i wish i hadn't lost all my old footage from highschool that i made... that would be perfect. But a doco on what?? I really have no idea. At the moment i am thinking to broad, such as "Alinta's Useful Advice on Almost Everything". I am currently doing a midsemester intensive on children's books and all the titles of the books have this sort of quirky worldly aura to it. Maybe i could think of something more compact such as 'Alinta's Semi-Useful Advice on 'insert word', 'insert word' and 'insert word'. Maybe then I could make the argument that my site has a particular demographic such as teenagers. I am interested in the picture book for older readers at the moment and this could be used in my essay in terms of structure as the text could be relatively advanced yet it could be filled with pictures and other um fun stuff.

but i'm not sure if this would be seen as somehow not academic enough to be an 'essay'. I'm sure i could make it as academic as possible but at the same time I would like to use myself as an example and make it relative to people of my own age and my own mental level. In other words make it for ME but, no, I am sure there are others like me both younger and older who may enjoy what i have to say. In this way i could make ideas usually seen in essays more easily accessible and interesting. Such as how Janette Winterson talks about quantum physics in her book Gut Symmetries which is about a lesbian love triangle, and funnily enough, making physics poetic and entwined in narrative really makes it accessible and marvelously interesting. Of course this is not a children's book I'm just jumping all over the place right now.

THE FOLIO

Now for this one i am supposed to make up some kind of amazingly original interface to put my work into. Very very daunting! I suppose i can do something that sums everything up and even make the interface of each page relate to the work it encompasses etc but no that’s stupid and i just can't think of any cool ideas. how can i bleed my work into the interface itself?? Is interface the right word even?? Was the very final day to hand it in week 14 or week 15?? All these questions are clouding my head. I don't know what to do. I still hate flash today just as much as i did the first day i walked into that dreaded 3.34 room. Does this mean i haven't grown over the course of the subject? Will i be marked down for this? Do i have to write 'i love flash' on my work to elude to the fact that i HAVE understood it like i did with my science assignments in grade 6?

I need GUIDENCE

********

I tried to do one of the two tutorials tonight from the email a couple of days ago. It's a scrolling thangamajig. I feel as though i have done it correctly but it just isn't happening. I don't know where i have gone wrong because the action script is a cut and paste job from the tutorial. So i can't go and say "oh i have my action script wrong, chortle". So i suppose my only option is to try it all over again but i feel a little low on the drive to continue with it. My other option is to... nope actually i don't have another option.

Week 6

I think you'll find that a cane toad is NOT a frog, frogs are nice. ok i needed to get that off my chest it was annoying me.
